Gemini App Notifications Blocked? Fix It on Android

If Gemini notifications are blocked, delayed, or completely silent even though everything looks enabled, you’re probably dealing with Android background restrictions or hidden notification settings. This happens a lot on Samsung, Xiaomi, OnePlus, and even newer Pixel devices. The good news is the fix usually takes a few minutes once you know where Android is actually hiding the problem.

Try This First: Turn On Notification Categories for Gemini

Open Android Notification Settings

On most Android phones, this starts in the regular Settings app.

• Open Settings, go into Notifications
• Then tap App Notifications.

If you’re on Samsung, One UI hides some of this a little deeper than stock Android does. Pixel phones tend to make it more obvious. Either way, once you’re inside Notifications, you should be able to manage lock screen alerts, notification behavior, and specific app settings from there.

Enable “Manage Notification Categories for Each App”

Look for a setting called Manage notification categories for each app OR something similar, and turn it on. Samsung phones especially tend to hide this by default inside One UI, so if you never knew notification categories existed, that’s normal.

Once it’s enabled, Android stops treating every alert the same way. You’ll be able to customize individual alert types for apps instead of relying on one big master toggle that may or may not behave the way you expect. Chats, reminders, updates (all that stuff starts showing up separately).

Turn On Gemini or Google App Notification Categories

Now go back into the Google app notifications screen and open Notification categories. Depending on your phone, you may see separate categories for Gemini, Assistant, reminders, updates, or other alert types sitting underneath the main toggle.

If your Gemini apk alerts still look blocked, check the main Google app too, not just the Gemini icon on your home screen. Gemini relies on the Google app more than most people realize, especially for system-level notifications and reminders.

Restart the App and Test Notifications

After changing notification categories, fully close the Gemini app and open it again. Android sometimes keeps old notification states hanging around until the app reconnects to the notification server properly.

Then send yourself a quick test reminder or trigger something that normally creates an alert. A lot of temporary notification glitches clear up right here, especially after changing hidden system settings or notification channels.

If nothing changes immediately, don’t panic yet.

Android Uses Notification Categories, Not Just One Master Toggle

Modern Android uses Notification Categories (sometimes called notification channels), and apps can split alerts into separate buckets behind the scenes.

So you can technically have notifications “enabled” while the one category Gemini actually needs is muted or disabled. That’s why reminders disappear while other alerts still come through fine. Same app, different channel.

Battery Optimization and Background Restrictions Can Block Alerts

Samsung is especially aggressive with this, but Xiaomi, OnePlus, and a few others do it too. The phone determines that an app is “inactive” and cuts off background network access. Thus, push notifications either arrive late or never show up until you open the app manually. 

Go into the battery settings for both Gemini and the main Google app and remove any power-saving restrictions you find. If there’s an option like Unrestricted battery usage or Allow background activity, turn it on.

If Notifications Are Enabled, but Gemini Still Does Not Alert You

Check Do Not Disturb and Silent Notification Settings

Do Not Disturb causes a surprising amount of fake “notification problems.” Gemini can look completely broken when your phone is quietly suppressing alerts at the system level.

Check whether DND, Bedtime mode, or any Focus mode is active, especially if notifications stop overnight or during work hours.

Verify Background Data Access

If Gemini notifications are enabled in system settings but alerts still never arrive, background data access is worth checking next. Some phones quietly restrict network activity for apps running in the background, especially after battery optimization kicks in.

Gemini also delegates a lot of its alert handling through the primary Google app, so both apps need permission to keep working when your screen is off. If background permissions are blocked for either one, notifications can stall until you manually open the app again.

Test Notifications With Another Google Account

If you’ve tried everything else and notifications still act broken, test Gemini with another Google account for a few minutes. It sounds random, but this actually helps narrow down whether the issue is tied to your phone or your account itself.

If both accounts fail the same way, the problem is probably still device-level. Usually, background restrictions or notification handling are somewhere inside Android.
